The large land owners were the most powerful people. They were rich and owned slaves. Farmers were also people in the southern colonies. Farmers worked the land and relied on family members for labor on the farm. American southerners did not have good health. Outbreaks of malaria and yellow fever were very common down in the south. Family connections were less prevalen in the south.
